Lucy Campbell

I am a philosophy graduate (BA, Kings College London (1st Class) offering tutoring in Philosophy for A-level or first year undergraduate students. My emphasis is on developing the student’s own ideas through critical discussion. This approach fosters a deeper understanding of the issues at hand, and encourages much more enthusiasm for the subject than simply being told what the problems and various attempted solutions are. I am happy to help with advice on writing essays and exam technique, as well as reading through and assessing the student’s written work. I am currently undertaking an MPhil (research) degree. My special areas of interest are Philosophy of Mind/Psychology, Philosophical Logic, Metaphysics, Epistemology and Philosophy of Language/Linguistics, although I am competent in all areas of ‘analytic’ philosophy. I can also provide tutoring help with basic formal logic and critical thinking. My charges range from £10 – £16p/h, depending on whether or not I am required to do ‘out of hours’ work, such as assessing essays. Please contact me by email at lucy.p.campbell@kcl.ac.uk with the following information: what area or areas of philosophy you would like tutoring help with, how often and when you would like to be ‘tutored’, what you require from your tutoring – do you need a tutor to get you through exams, for help with a specific problem, just to have an opportunity to discuss philosophy, etc. – and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Dr Nicholas Joll

I am a philosopher, residing in Essex, who has taught at the Universities of Essex and Hertfordshire and with the Open University. All of that teaching has been in philosophy and at undergraduate level. However, I have done A-Level philosophy tutoring too; and I have spent much time advising students – not all of them philosophers – on writing. I am the editor of Philosophy and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012). I know where my philosophical towel is. (That last bit is a Hitchhiker joke, for those not in the know . .)  You can find out more about me, and contact me, via my website (nickjoll.co.uk)

I provide a philosophy and religious studies tutoring service to students in all areas of London. I have over a decades experience in the realm of philosophy education and teaching. I received my bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours in 2005 at the University of Bristol. I continued my studies at Bristol, where I received my MA with Distinction in February 2008. I have taught AQA philosophy at Skinner’s Academy and Bsix College in Hackney, London. I am presently based as a humanities teacher for The Southover Partnership School, in North London, where I teach – among other things – Edexcel religious studies at A-Level. I also communicate philosophical ideas through my YouTube channel, ‘offthebeatontrack’. My expertise resides in the areas of ethics and philosophy of religion, but I can also help you to untangle the many confusions surrounding those tricky epistemology subjects, including direct realism, indirect realism, idealism, the tripartite definition of knowledge, and the origin of concepts. In general, I help students by providing new perspectives and resources on key topics, and by helping to clarify technical terms, as well as offering essay guidance, including pre-marking and plans.

I was an impassioned student of philosophy – receiving a first class degree from Manchester and an MPhil from Cambridge in the subject – and I have carried through this enthusiasm into my teaching. I had a very successful year teaching IB Philosophy at Sevenoaks School at both Higher and Standard Level. 15 out of the 17 students received a 7 (top mark) in the paper that I taught on Descartes. I am also familiar with the A-level curriculum. I pride myself on my ability to explain complex concepts with clarity enabling students to understand material that is less daunting than it initially appears. This imbues students with the required confidence to succeed in the subject. I am also experienced in the practice of giving mock interviews to Oxbridge applicants for philosophy. B Perez-Bango

If you find Philosophy too abstract or difficult, I am offering a friendly and easy-to-follow tutorial. Philosophy is about everything: us, our relation with people and environment. In a way, we are philosophers in a small scale when we come to conclusions, sustain an argument or try to understand some complex ideas. Philosophy also provides you with essential tools needed for other academic subjects; I refer to it as the ‘gym’ for our reasoning. If you are interested and live in South West London you can contact me on begobango@hotmail.com

Eliana Zur-Szpiro

I am available for tutoring a-level and degree level philosophy in London. I love philosophy and am rather good at it, though it wasn’t always that way. I had to work hard to develop study techniques and an understanding of my subject, particularly as I have motor dyspraxia, a learning difficulty. I am therefore well equipped to share my skills and knowledge. I achieved the highest first in my year for BA in Philosophy at the University of Nottingham. While there I presented a paper in an academic conference at the University of Glasgow. I also gained a Distinction in my Masters in Political Philosophy from UCL. I am currently tutoring a student in economics and philosophy. I informally tutored two people in philosophy while at University. I also taught a course in political philosophy at a community centre. My approach is to develop with a student a set of techniques that reflect the student’s personality. I think people are often capable of more than they realise because they lack confidence. If you wish to achieve your potential and/or have a lot of fun doing philosophy, get in touch! elianazurszpiro@gmail.com

Peter Dennis

Philosophy is one of the toughest A Levels on offer, so it carries great rewards and high risks. Even for the most able students, having an experienced tutor is often the surest way to success. Having spent eight years studying the subject, I can guide you through the basic concepts and (if need be) into the complexities of contemporary philosophical thought. One to one teaching means I ll always start from what you already understand, even if you think you re completely lost. From there, we ll move quickly up to the AQA requirements and, if you feel like it, far beyond them. Qualifications: BA Philosophy (Reading University); MA Philosophy (University of Paris VII); currently completing PhD Philosophy (Reading University) Outstanding references on request. p.s.dennis@reading.pgr.ac.uk

Rachel Gardner

I first started tutoring some of my fellow students in Philosophy during my second year at University and greatly enjoyed helping people improve their understanding of the subject and gain higher marks. Once my degree was completed I began tutoring A-Level students in Religious Studies and Philosophy in the Leeds area before re-locating to the Brighton / Hove area and have now been a private tutor for the last 6 years and I am fully CRB checked. The potential of tutoring can only be maximised if each student feels comfortable in lessons, so I actively try to cultivate a good working relationship with each student. After all, if I were not enthusiastic and passionate about the subject it would be impossible to motivate any students to be enthusiastic about it! So far all my students have improved their performance by at least two grade boundaries following tuition with me and all my students have achieved either A*, A or B grades in their exams. You can get in touch with me via my website www.rcrtuition.com or email me rcrgardner@yahoo.co.uk or call 07904 863792

Amy Hemingway

I graduated with a Masters Degree in Theology from Oxford University. I have been tutoring in Religious Studies and Philosophy at GCSE and A Level for over 6 years in Oxford. I am fully CRB checked and have taken courses in child safety and protection online. I aim to make philosophy as interesting as possible for the student, and to bring the questions to life rather than the student feeling bogged down and overwhelmed by wordy textbooks and confusing vocabulary. I am deeply passionate about helping others get closer to the truth about themselves and the universe, and at the end of the day this is why studying Philosophy matters. The quest for truth must always be the most important aspect of the course. For assistance with your course, at whatever level it may be, please contact me on amy@hemingwayart.co.uk.

I’m a full-time, professional, teacher and qualified private tutor who’s taught students at a wide variety of levels. My students see improved grades in exams and an increase in confidence and general understanding in their subject. I have degrees in both Philosophy & Ehics and Geography . I’m intellectually excitable, a quality with which I hope to infect my students. Above all I aim to make my students autonomous learners with the ability to master their subject and an appreciation of why that’s worth doing. Teaching Experience: My sessions are interactive, exploratory and creative. I don’t turn up with the same shrink-wrapped lessons for every student; I’ll adapt to your personal needs, your specific goals and your own style of learning. I’m especially experienced with GCSE and A Level Philosophy Exams. A balance between understanding the material and preparation for exams is essential, and my role is often to balance out the “production line” model of large-class teaching at schools and colleges.
I can also help with exam performance issues and study methods, including advanced techniques for memorization and speed reading. Keoghmaria@rocketmail.com

Sam Kukathas

Hello I am a passionate philosophy tutor who has experience tutoring at all levels of undergraduate philosophy. I am based in Oxford. I am the current holder of the 2011-2012 Centre of Ethics and Legal Philosophy scholarship at the University of Oxford, as well as a PhD student in legal philosophy. In addition I was nominated for a teaching tutor award at King’s College London in 2011. I specialise in legal, political and moral philosophy, but I am competent in all areas of analytical philosophy. As a philosopher I can help students learn to think critically through problems, by teaching them to break down the concepts within the problems. I would be delighted to hear of any enquiries from prospective students studying philosophy whether at A-Level or undergraduate. My approach is dependent on the individual needs of the student, so please contact me by email indicating what sort of tutoring assistance you require, whether it is help with essay writing, particular modules, or something else entirely. I have been teaching A level philosophy for 7 years. I know exactly what it takes to excel and how to teach this in a straightforward and engaging way, and most of my students have achieved A or A* grades. Some of these achievements reflect very impressive improvements, and I take on students of all abilities. In addition to my teaching experience at A Level, I’ve taught at the Undergraduate level for 5 years, giving lectures, seminars, and tuition to undergraduates. I have a First Class degree from Reading, a BPhil from Oxford University, and a PhD from Heythrop, University of London. I will tailor the style, pace, content, and depth of teaching to support your growth, which will depend on your needs, abilities, goals, and learning style. I can teach content from any A level syllabus, and can coach on exam technique and essay writing technique for any exam board, which can have a big effect on final results. If you would like to understand the subject better, go beyond what you’ve covered in the classroom, prepare for philosophy at university, or simply to get the best exam grade possible, get in touch! I can teach face-to-face from home in Reading, or at your home or public location in Bristol, London, or possibly other places within reach (at a possible extra cost for travel) and can also offer online help (usually via Skype) for anyone worldwide. I am also able to offer help with essays and mock exams, which can be done either face to face or over email and Skype. Contact me with information about how I can help you at info@philosophytuition.com or via my contact form on www.philosophytuition.com.

Marelle Rice

As a Head of RS in a large comprehensive school, I have taught philosophy and ethics at A Level and GCSE for ten years.  I am also an A Level examiner for Edexcel and understand the assessment methods as confidently as the subject matter.  Former A Level students have been amongst the top ten candidates sitting the Edexcel Philosophy and Ethics Religious Studies examination.  This is no small achievement when approximately 6,000 students enter the exam each year.  Consistently yielding positive residuals, students’ GCE results place my A Level teaching on an ALPS grade of 2, which means I am among the top 10 per cent of A Level Philosophy and Ethics teachers in the country. Based in Hertfordshire I can offer tuition in my home or yours with negotiable rates.  Contact me on marelle.rice@hotmail.co.uk .

Leo Nikolaidis

Available for private tutoring, proof reading, discussion, and help with exam technique in the Bristol area. I have an MA in Philosophy as a Way of Life from the University of Liverpool and run adult evening classes in the subject. What I try to provide is help with close reading of set passages, taking care to discuss the specific definitions of words and their implications. This is a technique which students have found very helpful, as it does take time, which is perhaps not abundantly available in the classroom. Also, because philosophy is essentially a conversation, students have been glad to have someone to bounce their ideas off, something which is not available in private study. After each session, through email correspondence, I will provide a set of links to useful websites as well as essay marking, focussing on helping the student to produce articulate, clear and flowing prose. CRB check. Competitive rates. Please contact me on: leoniko@hotmail.com

I am first and foremost a passionate communicator and educator. Alongside the formal qualifications and training (I have a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Reading and have been teaching philosophy for 9 years) what you’ll get from me is a highly enthusiastic, committed, intellectual ally who wants you to succeed.  Having taught philosophy to people of all ages I know from personal experience that anyone, at any level can move forward in their understanding with the right structure, guidance, encouragement, feedback and support and I mould any tutoring work to the needs and current areas for growth of my tutees. I believe that the best tutoring equips tutees with the skills and techniques to develop further for themselves. I have taught A-Level Philosophy and Ethics in a Secondary School setting and tutored A-Level students for both AQA and OCR qualifications privately. I offer tutoring to aid understanding of specific course content and more generally in philosophical and academic skills i.e. essay-writing practice, exam technique, research development, critical thinking and discourse. I am available for face-to-face tuition in Bristol and the wider area and also online via Skype for distance learning. 0-7-5-3-2-3-2-9-9-8-7 jonathan[dot]lohan[dot]powell[at]googlemail[dot]com
