Dr Nicholas Clarke

I completed a PhD in philosophy at the University of London in 2019, passing with no corrections required. My research focused upon ethics and metaethics. Prior to that, I earned a master’s degree in philosophy, gaining distinctions in all modules (i.e. metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, metaethics, political philosophy, and history of philosophy), with a very high distinction in my dissertation (a conjunction of the philosophy of religion and Bayesian probability). Given my academic background, I am well qualified to tutor A Level or undergraduate philosophy. Philosophy can be a challenging subject, but it is also an immensely rewarding one. My aim in tutoring is to demystify it — making things as clear and comprehensible as possible, and providing detailed and effective feedback. Not least, I want to make philosophy fun! Please email me at nclarke431@hotmail.com, telling me what area of philosophy you would like help with, and your level (A level or undergraduate).

Joe McKenzie (BA MA PGCE)

I studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University from 2016-19 before doing a master’s degree in Philosophy at King’s College London, and then a PGCE at Cambridge University, which I completed in 2022. Since then I have been teaching AQA Philosophy full-time at a sixth-form college. My aim in philosophy is ‘complete clarity’, as Wittgenstein put it. Please email me at joeamckenzie@outlook.com, telling me what you would like help with. I am enthusiastic to tutor both sixth-form and university students, and can meet in-person with those in Cambridge and online with those elsewhere.

Maria Balaska

I am a doctor of Philosophy and have teaching experience both with undergraduates and a-level students. I currently teach Philosophy of Mind, Ethics and Epistemology to A-level students in London. I am available both for private tutoring and e-mail/Skype support to students of all ages from A-level to Degree level. I offer help with writing essays and exam technique, as well as reading through and assessing the student’s written work. Moreover, for those studying Ancient Greek philosophy, I offer an introductory course to Ancient Greek to help with reading the original texts. Please contact me by email at maria@mariabalaska.com with the following information: what area of philosophy you would like tutoring help with, your level (undergraduate or A-level), how often and when you would like to be ‘tutored’ and what you require from tutoring and I will get back to you as soon as possible. For more information on my work and research see mariabalaska.com

Dan Beaton

I provide a philosophy and religious studies tutoring service to students in all areas of London. I have over a decades experience in the realm of philosophy education and teaching. I received my bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours in 2005 at the University of Bristol. I continued my studies at Bristol, where I received my MA with Distinction in February 2008. I have taught AQA philosophy at Skinner’s Academy and Bsix College in Hackney, London. I am presently based as a humanities teacher for The Southover Partnership School, in North London, where I teach – among other things – Edexcel religious studies at A-Level. I also communicate philosophical ideas through my YouTube channel, ‘offthebeatontrack’. My expertise resides in the areas of ethics and philosophy of religion, but I can also help you to untangle the many confusions surrounding those tricky epistemology subjects, including direct realism, indirect realism, idealism, the tripartite definition of knowledge, and the origin of concepts. In general, I help students by providing new perspectives and resources on key topics, and by helping to clarify technical terms, as well as offering essay guidance, including pre-marking and plans.

Kate Rogers

I have been teaching A Level Philosophy in comprehensive schools for nearly 10 years.  I have experience of teaching the whole of the A Level specification and I have developed my own resources to support students.  These are clear and easy to understand, they break down the course into manageable steps and give realistic guidance on how to approach the exam.  I am particularly passionate about helping students who are struggling to access the course and I have focused on developing my teaching style and resources to assist when this is the case.  I have developed a system to support students in preparing thoroughly for the exam in order to maximise success on the day.  My own adventures in philosophy started when I chose both A Level philosophy and religious studies.  I was immediately hooked and went on to study a BA in Philosophy and an MA in Philosophy and Religion, both at Heythrop College, University of London.  Since I became a teacher, I have specialised in A Level teaching and on supporting students through sixth form.  I am currently Deputy Director of Sixth Form at Chiswick School, where I teach A Level philosophy, as well as teaching religion and philosophy throughout the school.  For more information, please get in touch with me at: rogerskate20@yahoo.com.

I am currently an A level examiner for EDEXCEL Religious Studies (and have marked previously for Cambridge International Examinations and AQA for units in RS and Critical Thinking). I further contribute to writing articles for the RS review magazine and I have helped Polity press with reviewing forthcoming publications, as well as having an academic monograph published by Dr Verlag Muller.  I am able to teach A level Philosophy, Religious Studies and Critical Thinking to students at all levels from A level through to undergraduate level, where I have specific interests in analytic philosophy, theology and the history of German philosophy. I generally teach with exam success in mind, which includes help with writing essays, critical thinking skills and advanced revision techniques. My students have had great success in both A level and undergraduate courses. An up to date CRB check can also be provided.  I am available to teach within the London area. Amy Hemingway

I graduated with a Masters Degree in Theology from Oxford University. I have been tutoring in Religious Studies and Philosophy at GCSE and A Level for over 6 years in Oxford. I am fully CRB checked and have taken courses in child safety and protection online. I aim to make philosophy as interesting as possible for the student, and to bring the questions to life rather than the student feeling bogged down and overwhelmed by wordy textbooks and confusing vocabulary. I am deeply passionate about helping others get closer to the truth about themselves and the universe, and at the end of the day this is why studying Philosophy matters. The quest for truth must always be the most important aspect of the course. For assistance with your course, at whatever level it may be, please contact me on amy@hemingwayart.co.uk.

Rachel Jowett

I have been tutoring the AQA Philosophy and OCR Religious Studies for the past 10 years, including teaching the AQA course at a 6th Form College (where my students received the best results in Sussex for value added & 90% percentile Nationally) before becoming a full-time tutor. I’m a qualified teacher and senior examiner, have a BA (Hons) in Philosophy from University of Leeds, was awarded ‘Best Online Service’ by TTLN Business Awards in 2020. I can offer a range of electronic resources and have a track record of improving students’ marks by at least 2 grade boundaries. My extensive examining experience gives me an insight into how students can best approach exams: how to answer questions to maximise marks, common student misunderstandings and timekeeping. I can help students with planning essays, improving their critical analysis and evaluation, revision techniques, note taking and application of ethical theories. I created my own range of resources to provide students with complete notes, essay guides, mock exams and revision checklists. Feedback from students consistently describes me as knowledgeable, friendly, enthusiastic and able to breakdown and explain topics so that students can grasp the often-complex material. You can get in touch with me via my website  http://rcrtuition.com/ or email rachel@rcrtuition.com or call 07904863792.

If you would like to understand the subject better, go beyond what you’ve covered in the classroom, prepare for philosophy at university, or simply to get the best exam grade possible, get in touch! I can teach face-to-face from home in Reading, or at your home or public location in Bristol, London, or possibly other places within reach (at a possible extra cost for travel) and can also offer online help (usually via Skype) for anyone worldwide. I am also able to offer help with essays and mock exams, which can be done either face to face or over email and Skype.
